Crown Timber plc takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and assesses the environmental impact of all its activities. The primary impacts are as follows:
Sourcing softwood
Crown Timber plc sources softwood from well managed forest areas and suppliers in Finland and Sweden. Each supplier operates within a detailed regulatory and environmental framework.
Crown Timber has been granted certification by BM TRADA under the PEFC TRADA-TRAK Chain of Custody Certification Scheme (click here to view the certificate). This accreditation award confirms that a large majority of Crown Timber’s softwood product offering is sourced from suppliers who have themselves achieved PEFC certification for their products. Further details of PEFC environmental certification are available on www.pefc.org.
Crown Timber plc has again improved its position in respect of environmental accreditation.
Following a recent audit by BM TRADA, working under the PEFC TRADA-TRAK Scheme, Crown’s chain of custody endorsed imports have grown to above 70% of the total import, and Crown can now offer all softwood stock covered by certification as chain of custody accredited.
This includes the range of TR26 roof truss timbers, CLS, Structural Whitewood and Softwood (Redwood and Whitewood) Planed Sections and Mouldings.
Stuart McIntyre, Chief Executive of Crown Timber plc commented:
“We have continued our policy of sourcing our softwood supplies from well established Finnish and Swedish mills and have worked with them to achieve this improvement. This will further enhance our offer to our customers for whom the ability to source certified product has become an increasingly important issue”.
Sourcing Engineered Wood
Engineered wood is an environmentally efficient resource as the manufacturing process makes maximum utilisation of the timber fibre and minimises waste.
Timber Treatment
The low pressure impregnation of timber to protect against insect and fungal attack is a carefully controlled process, governed by strict regulatory standards and inspection processes by the Environmental Protection authorities in the UK and Ireland.
By investing in modern plant and equipment Crown ensures compliance with the highest industry standards (click here for further details) (PDF).
Shipping and Transport
Crown Timber assesses the environmental impact of its shipping supplies, ensuring best practice and minimal damage to the marine environment. Deliveries by road vehicles in the UK and Ireland are carefully rated for maximum fuel efficiency.
Timber in general
As a business based on the distribution of timber, Crown Timber naturally believes that the use of timber in construction has important environmental benefits, when compared with alternatives such as concrete, steel and masonry.
Timber is a natural, renewable, non-toxic, re-cyclable and bio-degradable material which provides excellent levels of thermal insulation. When sourced from well managed forests, with replanting and renewal programmes, timber is the natural building material of choice!
